Gary was a superb athlete. We played softball together at Wainwright Elementary and later in a summer league. Where he really excelled, though, was on the golf course. He and I caddied at Fircrest Golf Club. I took up the game there, but Gary was already ahead of me. My first tournament was for caddies at the club. Gary took the medalist honor, and I scored the worst in the qualifying round. That meant that his first match in the tournament was against me. He expertly dismantled me, winning the first ten holes and closing out the match. And, of course, he went on to win the tournament. First class guy.
